There’s a relaxing musical treat in store this Sunday afternoon (6 July, 2pm) at the Williamson Art Gallery in Slatey Road, Birkenhead. The early years of the 20th century will be evoked in an hour of authentic salon music performed by the Tivoli Orchestra under the direction of Edward Peak. The Tivoli Orchestra is a twelve-strong ensemble drawn from Orchestra dell’Arte players. Salon music was once a phenomenon found all over Europe, its popularity encouraged by the growth of the coffee house culture. So step back in time for an experience that’s both civilised and entertaining. No tickets are required but donations to the Friends of the Williamson Art Gallery will be appreciated. The gallery is a community asset that has been threatened by the funding cuts of recent times and fully deserves our support.
